چکیده

1) Studies were made of the accessory abducens nucleus and its relationship to the extraocular muscles besides the retractor bulbi muscles in the rat. 2) All the extraocular muscles had nerve fiber connections from the accessory abducens nucleus besides the retractor bulbi muscles. 3) The relationship between the accessory facial nucleus and accessory abducens nucleus was investigated. The accessory facial nucleus was located from dorsal of the principal facial nucleus to the medial proximal part of the descending part of the facial root fibers, while the accessory abducens nucleus was located from the medial distal part to the descending part of the facial root fibers.

Are laws that govern behavior embedded in the structure of the CNS? The case of Hering's law

The pattern of axonal terminations of individual premotoneuronal medium lead burst neurons (MLBs) has been elucidated with the help of the intraaxonal recording and horseradish peroxidase injection technique in alert behaving monkeys. These findings indicate that individual MLBs do not influence individual muscles; instead they influence groups of muscles. Horizontal medium lead burst neurons (...

The accessory nucleus of Luys in the rat.

The morphology and connections of the accessory nucleus of Luys were examined in male Wistar strain rats using normal materials stained for Nissl or myelin sheath, and employing the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. This nucleus is situated ventrocaudally to the subthalamic nucleus and rostrally to the substantia nigra. The cells of the nucleus were stained more faintly than those of the sub...

The nerve center of the rat extrinsic ocular muscles as studied using horseradish peroxidase.

1) The author established the representation of the lower motor center of all the extrinsic ocular muscles by means of HRP labeling in the rat. 2) The muscles which are supplied by the neurons on both sides of the oculomotor nuclei are the levator palpebrae superioris, superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior oblique, inferior rectus, superior oblique and lateral rectus. 3) The muscles which ar...

Basic optokinetic-ocular reflex pathways in the frog.

Frogs (Rana temporaria) have two midbrain nuclei that receive contralateral retinal afferents, and whose neurons respond to optokinetic stimulation. The basal optic nucleus is composed of direction-selective neurons with different response types. One type is activated exclusively by upward moving optokinetic targets; another type is activated only by downward moving targets. Two other types of ...

Anatomic and physiological characteristics of the ferret lateral rectus muscle and abducens nucleus.

The ferret has become a popular model for physiological and neurodevelopmental research in the visual system. We believed it important, therefore, to study extraocular whole muscle as well as single motor unit physiology in the ferret. Using extracellular stimulation, 62 individual motor units in the ferret abducens nucleus were evaluated for their contractile characteristics. Of these motor un...
